Bye Bye Mattress (Mattress Recycling Council)
Operated by Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) · Available in: CA, CT, OR, RI
A mattress-industry-funded stewardship program operating in states with mattress recycling laws. A per-unit fee is collected when a mattress or box spring is purchased, and that fee funds free recycling drop-off and required retailer take-back at delivery.
How it works
In participating states, a state-set stewardship fee (verified examples: Oregon $22.50 effective January 2025, Connecticut $19.50 effective October 2026) is added to the price of a new mattress or box spring at purchase. That fee funds free drop-off at MRC-run recycling sites and requires retailers to take back an old mattress when delivering a new one, at no extra charge.
Fees
Free to residents, funded by the per-unit fee already collected at purchase in participating states
Not accepted
A wet or visibly contaminated mattress may be refused at a drop-off site. The program only operates in the four states listed, it isn't available outside them at any price.
What to know before you go
Each state's program runs independently under MRC administration and its own state law, fee amounts and effective dates differ by state and change over time (Connecticut's fee is scheduled to change to $19.50 effective October 1, 2026), confirm the current rate on MRC's state-specific page rather than assuming a number.
If this program isn't an option for you
Outside California, Connecticut, Oregon, and Rhode Island, no equivalent stewardship fee exists, check your city's bulky-item pickup or a residential drop-off center instead, several of Green Orbyt's verified facilities already accept mattresses directly.
