Recycling & Disposal in Houston, TX

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department runs curbside recycling plus two Environmental Service Centers for household hazardous waste and e-waste, open to City of Houston residents.

Houston splits waste and recycling across three systems. Weekly curbside collection uses city-issued green (recycling) and brown (garbage) carts on a resident's assigned day, checked via the city's schedule tool or HtX Collects app. Household hazardous waste and electronics go to one of two Environmental Service Centers instead, free for City of Houston residents. Bulk items, tires, appliances, and general recyclables can also go to one of six Residential Drop-Off Centers spread across the city, also free for residents, though with more everyday materials than the Environmental Service Centers handle.

Curbside recycling rules

Curbside green-cart recycling accepts newspapers, magazines, catalogs, and office paper; plastic containers numbered #1-5 and #7 (rinsed and drained); aluminum and bimetal cans; glass bottles, jugs, and jars; flattened cardboard; and milk/juice/soup/plant-based-beverage cartons. Not accepted curbside: flexible plastics like bags and shrink wrap, food-soiled paper (napkins, paper towels), yard waste, textiles, and large plastic items like toys, hoses, coolers, or furniture, several of these belong at a Residential Drop-Off Center instead. Put your cart out between 6:00 PM the night before and 7:00 AM on your scheduled collection day.

TX also has state-specific programs, see the Texas state page.
