Paint

Hazardous material

In the 11 states and DC with a PaintCare program, leftover paint can be dropped off free at participating retailers and government sites. Outside those states, check your local household hazardous waste facility.

Curbside recycling?

No

Liquid paint does not belong in curbside recycling or regular trash. Fully dried latex paint is sometimes accepted as trash in areas without a PaintCare program, check local rules first.

Safety note

Oil-based paint, stains, and varnishes are hazardous waste in every state and require a hazardous waste facility or PaintCare site, never regular trash.

How to prepare it

  • Keep paint in its original, labeled container when possible
  • Do not mix different paints together
