Preparation instructions

Keep chemicals in original, labeled containers when possible. Do not mix materials. Tape both terminals of batteries before drop-off. Sharps must be in a state-approved or hard plastic puncture-proof container with a lid, loose sharps are not accepted.

Also accepts aerosol cans, asbestos (must be professionally abated, wetted, and double-bagged), home-generated sharps and medications, household cleaning products, pool and garden chemicals, and treated or contaminated wood cut to under 3 feet, per LA Sanitation's official items-accepted list. Its official items-accepted list separately names alkaline, lithium, lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and car/RV batteries, and lists butane and MAPP gas cylinders alongside propane, helium, and fire extinguishers under 'Compressed Gas Cylinders,' more specific than the general HHW/e-waste description used for most other S.A.F.E. Centers. Also serves as an extended Christmas tree drop-off and mulching site for a longer window than most locations (per a past season, December 26 through January 15), per LA Sanitation's official Christmas Tree Recycling page, which notes hours for this specific use may differ from the regular weekend HHW hours below, call ahead or check that page before visiting during tree season.

Not accepted here

Acetylene tanks, ammunition and explosives, business or commercial waste (see the separate VSQG program for small businesses), CO2 and oxygen cylinders, electric-vehicle batteries, exercise equipment, fans/heaters/air conditioners/vacuums, laboratory or medical waste, marine flares, metal light fixtures, and radioactive materials. Ordinary curbside recyclables (glass, plastic, cardboard, paper, metal) and yard waste belong in your blue or green bin instead.
