Motor Oil & Automotive Fluids

Hazardous material

AutoZone and O'Reilly Auto Parts both recycle used motor oil for free, AutoZone up to 5 gallons per visit, O'Reilly up to 10 gallons. Neither accepts antifreeze; take that to a household hazardous waste facility instead.

Curbside recycling?

No

Never pour motor oil, antifreeze, or other automotive fluids down a drain or into curbside recycling.

Safety note

Do not mix different fluids together, mixing oil with antifreeze, gasoline, or solvents can make the whole batch unrecyclable and turns it into hazardous waste.

How to prepare it

  • Keep oil in a clean, sealed, leak-proof container
  • Do not mix fluid types
  • Bring used oil filters along, many of the same programs accept them
