The Battery Network (formerly Call2Recycle)
Operated by The Battery Network · Available nationwide
A manufacturer-funded program collecting rechargeable batteries and cellphones for free at thousands of public drop-off points nationwide, including many retail stores. Call2Recycle completed its rebrand to The Battery Network; some collection sites and single-use (primary) battery acceptance vary by location.
How it works
Drop rechargeable batteries or cellphones (up to 11 lbs per drop-off) at a participating public collection site. Collected material ships directly to contracted recyclers at no cost to the consumer.

Free collection of rechargeable batteries and cellphones is universal at participating sites, but single-use (primary, e.g. alkaline) battery acceptance is site-by-site, not every location takes them, and only Vermont, Illinois, and Washington, D.C. mandate free universal primary-battery collection. Use the official locator to confirm before a trip.
